Atonal Choir File presents this band at its best. Jonathan Horne's guitar genius flowing through unexpected melodic textural acrobatics -- Jordan Johns propulsivee thrash and groove -- Ethan Smith's surging and weaving low end -- and me drawing maps for us to get lost inside.

Texas is an intense environment for those who think outside the box, live outside the pale, paint outside the lines. At its best, these obstacles inspire creative non-conformist Texans to do something better. A good enemy is required for a good story.

Difficulty creates more vibrant colors, more extreme strains of culture. Not talking about the flat cap fingerpainting SoCal soft rock plaguing the globe. That stuff exists in TX too, mostly reenacted by living, breathing social media accounts.

The good stuff has to stand up to the strain of a nascent police state, repressive idiots in power, extreme weather, trucks so large and loud they look and sound like punctured, flappily deflating Macy's parade ornaments.

To be in this vein -- this is our hope.

We draw inspiration from these old Texas strains: Scratch Acid, Butthole Surfers, William S Burroughs (yes he lived here and grew pot on a south texas ranch for years), David Berman, Mayo Thompson / Red Crayola, the Elevators (duh), Big Boys, Ornette Coleman, Terry Allen, Lydia Mendoza, Bongo Joe -- innumerable others.
